Binatbatan Festival: A Celebration of Vigan Traditional Crafts

Festivals have social and economic implications. Happiness is overwhelmed by negativity and insecurity on our chaotic and hectic globe, thus the need for something that may provide optimism has been felt time and time again. As a result, festivals arose that allow us to forget about our troubles and appreciate the pleasant aspects of life, even if only for a few days.

Festivals in the Philippines allow people to showcase their rich culture while also honoring history and patron saints. They're colorful, enormous, and full of pomp and show. It's no surprise that each province has its unique Filipino Fiesta of which they are quite proud.

Vigan, Ilocos Sur is one of the grandest showcases of Philippine architectural heritage. The Binatbatan Festival is one of the various festivals that we celebrate in Vigan. Binatbatan Festival has its origins in Vigan's abel weaving business, which existed long before the Spaniards arrived to colonize the Philippines. Binatbatan Festival of the Arts is a city-wide cultural display that began in 1993 to coincide with the city's Tres de Mayo celebrations.

Binatbatan Festival's second year celebration was highly unique. The celebration includes events such as the opening of the food and trade fair, abel house décor, carabao painting, boklan art, tile mosaic, and a lot  of performance in Calle Crisologo. The Calesa Parade is the festival's first major event. All were beautifully designed, with the majority of the decorations portraying Vigan's rich culture and traditions. There was also an abel fashion show, which was fascinating. Local designers, with the help of the government, put on fashion displays to demonstrate how the handcrafted abel is manufactured. The Binatbatan festival street dance and showdown is the major event of the celebration. The occasion was marked by joy and optimism. Each person's face radiated happiness. Dancers wore their brightest smiles, and the spectators relished a happy moment in their life.

Festivals are like beautiful seasons that come and bring us joy and add a new dimension to our lives. Festivals like these teach us valuable lessons that we can apply to our future lives. Festival values must be preserved, archived, and passed along to future generations. We must preserve our cultural values, respect the methods of life that our forebears left behind, and maintain a long-lasting culture.
